hitchin ain't dead...

...but the camera is...if you've ever wondered, yes, the rubber gasket is a very crucial component of a water proof housing.  Our second camera awaits in NZ, and until May fourth, I will do my best to keep the blog alive, besides it's about time I wrote something.

We have been in Noosa since April second, where the Wegener family graciously took us under their wing, nurturing us as two of their own.

Jaded by the ease at which we got up north in one lift, via a 34 wheel semi, we knew that hitching the 1,029 km may not prove as easy this time...especially with a 100% chance of rain forecast.  One thing was for sure though, a good old fashion adventure was in the cards.

11 lifts and 33 hours later...we made it to Sydney.

Though drivers ranged from arborists to mums.  They shared a larger list of commonalities than I woulda guessed.  Everyone listens to the the brilliant national Australian radio station, "triple j".  It was a surprise to see CB radios adorning most dashboards to tune into where the truckers were seeing "candy cars" and "flash for cash" (two endearing names for cops).  Most rides came with a complimentary dose of second hand smoke that reassured you that you're still alive.  And without fail, everyone who gave us a lift was graced by a genuine kind heartedness that would leave a yank wondering "what's the catch?".

We got our last hitch into Coffs Harbour just around dusk last night after about 9 lifts. We spent the night on a banana farm. Our driver, who offered us the place for the night had a tattoo on her neck and a nice eyebrow piercing. She told us of her 23 year old son who was in a high speed police chase, and can't drive for 10 years.  He now collects scrap metal for a living.  When we got to her place, her husband announced he was "on the pot" through the open door that joined the bathroom to the living room. He emerged some minutes later donning a mullet, but only about half his teeth. We all spent the evening watching movies, and ate buttered crumpets on the sofa for dinner.  They dropped us on the highway this morning on their way to their usual Saturday at the pub.  They said, there they can get a steak, chips and a salad for $7.50, drink pints, and bet on dog racing. They were some kind hearted, salt of the earth people.

The world is full of creep's n weirdos, but it's good to see most people really ain't all that bad.
