“Papa Bill’s Ocean Blue Jacket”
My Dad gave me this old blue fleece lined jacket when I graduated from high school and headed off to San Antonio for the Air Force’s Pararescue training pipeline. Since then I’ve worn it all over the states adventuring. I have worn it rock climbing and backpacking in the mountains of New Mexico outside Albuquerque, back country skiing and sailing the Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska where I am now stationed. I even wear it out on the town quite often. My favorite thing about this jacket though, and its biggest adventure, was when my Mom bought it for my Dad back in the 80’s for an ocean crossing on his new trimaran from Marina Del Rey, California down the coast of Baja, to Cabo and then across the Pacific to Maui where they were living at the time. I look up to my Dad for inspiration in my own sailing now as I hope to hone my skills and do some ocean crossings myself. Unfortunately the zipper broke a few months back making it impractical to wear as much, but I recently busted it out for a bluebird day of skiing the headwaters at Moonlight Basin, Montana with my buddy Niles who took this photo in hopes to make onto the Wornwear blog.
